e-cigarete

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or vapes) represent an alternative way of consuming nicotine, which has helped many heavy smokers quit traditional cigarettes. E-cigarettes do not contain tar, but they still contain nicotine as well as many other compounds that affect the body. Their overall impact on health is less harmful than traditional tobacco smoke, but negative effects on oral health still exist. Research on this topic is ongoing, and in the future, we will certainly learn more about all the ways these products affect our health. These are the facts we can currently confirm with certainty.

How Do E-Cigarettes Affect Oral Health?

1. Periodontal Disease

As already mentioned, most e-cigarettes contain a certain percentage of nicotine. Nicotine affects blood vessels throughout the body, including those in the gums. This leads to reduced circulation and an increased risk of gum disease. Poor blood supply results in weaker tissue nutrition and a weaker defense against pathogens. This is how gum diseases develop. It usually begins with inflammation (gingivitis), which can later progress to gum recession, i.e., periodontitis.

2. Dry Mouth

The aerosol inhaled when using e-cigarettes causes decreased saliva production and the sensation of dry mouth. This creates a favorable environment for various oral conditions such as gum inflammation, cavities, bad breath, and burning sensations on the tongue.

3. Acidic Environment

In addition to nicotine, the liquid inside e-cigarettes and vapes contains propylene glycol, a compound that breaks down into acids as it passes through the mouth. An acidic environment is ideal for the growth and development of bacteria that lead to cavities. The occurrence of cavities is especially pronounced when using e-cigarettes with sweet flavors, which are currently very popular among younger users.

4. Tooth Discoloration

Although they do not contain tar, this type of cigarette can still cause tooth discoloration due to high nicotine concentration. While this represents only an aesthetic issue, it is still important information to keep in mind.

How Can You Reduce The Negative Effects Of E-Cigarettes?

First and foremost, stay informed about the type of product you are using. Although many manufacturers do not list ingredients on the packaging, there are products available that are sugar-free and, of course, nicotine-free. Additionally, to reduce the negative impact of bacteria on teeth and gums, drink a glass of water after using an e-cigarette or vape to help neutralize the acidic environment.

If you notice a rapid deterioration in your oral health (swollen gums, bleeding gums, tooth sensitivity, burning sensations of the oral mucosa…), contact your dentist immediately.
