It’s that time of year when we all look forward to taking a break from our daily obligations. Unfortunately, dental problems tend to appear at this time, partly due to the summer heat and partly due to a lack of attention to oral hygiene. Here are 5 tips to help ensure your vacation goes smoothly, without pain or dental emergencies, and with a bright smile.
1. Schedule a Dental Checkup Before You Travel
This one is essential. You don’t want unexpected tooth pain ruining your long-awaited vacation. Even if everything seems fine, visit your dentist for a cleaning and polishing so your smile looks perfect in vacation photos.
2. Pack Your Oral Hygiene Essentials
Make sure to bring everything you normally use so you don’t disrupt your routine. This matters—even if it takes up a bit more space in your luggage. Essentials include your toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, or interdental brush. If you wear a retainer, don’t forget the cleaning tools you use for it. It’s also a good idea to replace your toothbrush just before you leave, as heat and humidity can cause bacteria to multiply on an old one. If you’re flying, keep your hygiene kit in your carry-on in case your luggage gets lost. Also, check airline liquid restrictions in advance.
3. Be Careful With Vacation Treats

Vacations are a time to relax, and diet rules often go out the window. Ice cream and sweets are part of the fun—we’re not saying avoid them, but do drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water helps rinse away food particles and sugars, and can be a lifesaver until you get back to your room to brush. Snacking on cheese is also great for your teeth in these situations.
4. Drinks That Stain Teeth
If you’ve whitened your teeth before the trip, the last thing you want is to undo the results. Red wine, dark fruit juices, and black coffee are known to stain teeth. Try to avoid them—or at least use a straw so the liquid touches your teeth as little as possible.
5. Stick to Your Routine
Even if the vacation mood takes over, brush your teeth at least twice a day—morning and night. After long summer nights, don’t go to bed without brushing. If you’re going on a long day trip without access to a bathroom, take a travel-sized mouthwash with you to maintain your oral hygiene on the go.
With just a bit of planning, you can avoid dental issues and enjoy your holiday with a fresh, healthy smile.
