When a patient first receives new dentures, it takes some time to get used to it. It is important to be familiar with the basic guidelines so that you can be comfortable in this period of time. Proper denture cleaning represents a big part of this adjustment period. It is necessary to take care of your dentures as well as you would take care of crowns and bridges.

When you get a new venture, in the first week you will need to contact your dentist if you notice that the denture is not stable or you feel some kind of pain and pressure. Places in your mouth where dentures ‘pinches’ will turn red, and requires fixing. That way, you will be able to comfortably use it and you will not have serious consequences on your oral mucosa. If you have partial dentures that have different metal hooks and parts, you should contact your dentist if you notice that the denture does not stand firmly on the remaining teeth.

Avoiding wearing dentures compromises the whole work. The teeth and mucose in your mouth changes during the time. After a while, if you do not use your denture, it will not fit anymore.  During chewing try to distribute bites to both sides of your mouth symmetrically. This allows the dentures to be stable.

Denture cleaning:

After each meal, it is necessary to remove the denture from your mouth and wash it with the special brush and toothpaste. You can sleep at night with the denture in your mouth. However, it is also necessary to wash it before going to bed and after waking up.

Once a week, put the denture to stand for one night in a glass of water with a tablespoon of baking soda. You can also use denture cleaning tablets from the pharmacy.

As the years go by, you may notice that the denture becomes unstable. The situation in your mouth changes with age and the denture has to be adapted to the new situation. Contact your dentist so you can properly use your denture again.
